Ego-centric Society!

A baby is born knowing nothing about the cruel world that exists out there. His parents have already built up hopes as to what he is going to become, a doctor or perhaps an engineer, while the infant is still sound asleep and oblivious of the plans his parents have made already!

Pakistani parents usually want their children to become doctors or engineers, or the high ranked so called "uncorrupted" civil servants. This is completely fine for the EGO-CENTRIC parents, who are naive of what their children wants. If our elders or parents look around and broaden their horizons then they might be able to behold that there are thousands of other fields, which can earn them the same level of respect and status in society. Corporate bankers, human resource, advertising, architecture, art, web development, music and not to forget media, are some of the fields which should be kept in mind while deciding children's career.

Talking about divergent careers, sports can be taken as a serious career option. Sports generally is taken as a recreational past-time in Pakistan except of course CRICKET! It's not like Pakistan does not have talent. Recently, sports gala took place at Lahore School of Economics. I, being a student at LSE saw some future champions in the making. We have Soccer , table-tennis, Badminton, and not to miss Basket Ball players. But the problem still remains... our parents do not consider these as serious career options.

It will remain there as long as we ourselves do not try to think out of the box. We should try to convince our parents and enlighten them with other career possibilities. Not only our future but our Country's future relies on us. Pakistan has had enough doctors and engineers, it is time we get Pakistan career oriented people!

  2. I totally agree with u.Parents usually only want what is best for thie child. And they get overly involved in career decisions. They think that only doctors, lawyers ect are safe and respectable jobs and sports is considered less serious and less stable than traditional careers.

  3. pakistani families have a long tradition of never letting children have what they want. thats nothing we dont already know. it doesnt seem like much can be done about it because its a vicious cycle. your parents wont let you play sports and you will in turn deny your children their choices

  4. This really has been a issue with many children over time because of the ego-centric attitude of the parents. The intrest of the child is neglected due to which he can not get along to the things as the parents want so its better for the parents as well as the child to select a career of their own choice.

  5. It’s really nicely written by sadaf ikram and I believe she has highlighted one of the issues facing by new generations in Pakistan.
But never to forget that we are living and talking about under-developed nation which is still struggling to get the basic Necessity of their lives and the literacy rate is not more than 23-25 % of total population. Plus we can't forget the scarce resources of sports available in this country such as e.g. coaches for tennis or other sports, clubs & training institutions.
fortunately or unfortunately we have hockey as national game but i can't see any progress so far for past few years...due to lack of resources and motivation...now come to the current scenario the most popular game (cricket) playing by the most of the national youth...so far they are not doing any good for themselves as well as to the nation.
There was a time say 15 years back in Pakistan SQUASH player Jahangir khan was world champ then later Jan sheer came and won matches....but after them no one showed up. WHY? According to Jan Sheer khan's interview in the TV he said (I am ready to train people but we don't have resources plus govt.is not showing interest).

So my dear fellows. its not about your parents they don't want their kids to chose sports as profession its about the current scenario in the country which doesn't let them think about this.

So ultimately parents are looking for such careers for their children who can save their future...so that they'll not suffer in their lives for food, shelter etc.

So Dear Fellows...I hope i didn't disappoint you to not chose "sports "as a career...but i just want u people to look practically.

If you still feel we have coaches for the tennis or football etc and enough resources to sharp the existing talent then i will suggest you to go ahead.

In developed countries such USA, Canada, Australia, Uk etc....the schools offer scholarship for all kind of sports so children have more opportunities than countries like ours.

    Best regards
